Bamboo growing?

Hi there, our office has had two bamboo stems in water for about a year and it is almost three feet tall. I was wondering if it would be possible to take a leaf from it and grow another. As you can tell, I am a little bit of a dummy when it comes to this. Any tips or advice how to do it would be great.

Yes, you can take a cutting from the original bamboo stalk. I would suggest taking it from the bottom of the stalk where roots already exist and sticking the original bamboo stalk back in water. Just a heads-up, if you are planning on putting it in a container you'll do fine. Be careful planting it outside, it is very hearty and will take over your whole back yard.
Reply:You won't be able to sprout a new plant from a leaf, but taking a piece of stalk will do the trick. Make sure you get several nodes (those lines that run around the stalk) on your piece before putting it in water. That's where your new roots will come from. Planting it outside in Canada would be unjustifiable homicide as bamboo, as a species, cannot tolerate cold weather and will turn up it's little leaves and die.
Reply:You don't want to plant it outside as it will take over. It's hard to get rid of once it starts sprouting.
