I have a lot of bamboo stalks and I need to know how to turn them into useful fishing rods. Anybody know how? Do they work good? Are they easy to make?
Thanks :)
Bamboo fishing pole?
Bamboo poles are not easy to make, the bamboo must be long enough to be usable for the length of the pole you want to make. It needs to be cut longer than you want, split and dried, then reassembled as a unit so you have a 6 sided solid pole. It then needs to be cut in pieces of 3-4 feet and then have ferrules installed and the flex direction of the pole determined. Eyes and a handle are then installed, and the various wraps wound on the rod.
The best bamboo rods were works of art and worked very well. The less expensive rods were just that, less expensive, also lower quality and more fragile in some cases. A split bamboo rod is not easy to make and hardly worth the trouble since you can buy several different composite rods of a standard flex pattern in the stiffness you want and ready to fish for less money and a lot less trouble than what you are thinking. A "cane" pole is also made of bamboo cane but is without the fancy eyes and wrapping.
Reply:Im also assuming you mean cane pole.. Ive used them off and on and we didnt need a license to fish when using them either... ... just line and a hook *L*
Reply:I am going to assume you mean a cane pole without rod and reel which is very simple to make and not a bamboo flyrod with sections and laminates which is very very hard to make.
For the former Cut about a 10 foot section of the bamboo and remove the top till the diameter is a little smaller than the tip of your little finger. Form a notch for your line and attach a length of line slightly longer than the pole itself. Attach a lite weight and a hook. You can use anything from minnow and small jigs for crappie to worms and such for catfish and bluegill, sunfish, carp ect..
This is Huckleberry Finn fishing at its' best!
Reply:We used to make fishing poles from from a cain thicket we knew of when we were kids.We would cut them to lengths around 10 ft tie some 10lb line to it and head down to the creek. They worked fine for catching bullheads and perch.
Reply:Yea you are jsut making a cane pole. Just take a long pole. Tie some mono fishing line on the end and bait with a bober and a hook and you are in buisness. They are tipically used for panfish. They are great because you can put your line exactly where you want it.
