its kinda just a thing that they go through, you might want to try to clean whatever you have it in and snip off the roots that have grown too its okay and wont hurt it they do grow back, also what type of light do you have it in? they like indirect sun not direct sun, so put it across a sunny room or on a table near a window. and is it just 1 stick of bamboo or a bunch all together? i thikn that they do good when you have 3-4 together also. make sure that you are using fresh water and also might try using bottled water and not tap as the tap has chemicals that can cause damage to . i have a clump of 4 that i got 5 years ago and it is now 4 ft tall im so proud of it

I have chemical sensitivity and sensitivity with smells. I want to know if Bamboo flooring has any chemical smells to it. I want to rent a beach house but don't know if I should because it has bamboo floors which I heard could have a smell.

i am looking at moving into a downtown apartment that is too cute for words...except it has bamboo wood floors, which are beautiful, but we have a small dog (20 lbs) and i am concerned his nails are going to scratch it up. we've always lived on carpet and vinyl so i've never really had to take this into consideration before. obviously, we don't want to move in only to find out we will be needing to replace the floors when we leave.

I have a lot of Bamboo on side of my backyard and would like to grow it on other side as well. Roots can't be dug up either, they go to China.

I have a bamboo plant which was cut and want to start a new one from the broken section. Does bamboo work like that?

sure. Put the broken piece in a clear container of water. The broken piece is called the "terminal bud" when removed, auxilliary buds (side shoots) will grow to replace the terminal bud.

Reply:Of course it does just put it in a glass of water and wait for two weeks to go by then your bamboo shoot will have new roots appearing, then put it in water with rocks in it, they need clean tap water in order to root, i have tried water from a lake and it did not work, then i tried tap water then it rooted, i have done this for a year mine keeps on producing shoots so i root them in clean water. Questions regarding bamboo flooring installations.?
I am scheduled to install a bamboo floor throughout a ladies entire house minus a bathroom and a half bath (1825 sf) and she wants it done wihtout any t-moldings anywhere except where it touchs the tile of the 2 baths. The longest point on the width is 42ft which I plan to use the spacers and the length is 62ft. The layout of the house is such that it is not contiguous across the 62ft however my concern with her is having areas where the material will not be wide enough to actually work with, ie. a 1/8th sliver of wood to be against the wall. Has anybody done this and any suggestions on how to make her understand why the t-moldings are needed. Her concerns are purely aestetic because it is steam carbonized bamboo and the t-moldings are a deeper color than the flooring. HELP PLEASE!!!

if you hate your place, you may not be giving them the attention they need either, dont know about bamboo indoors as only have it growing in the garden, but money plants:
difused light, deep pot, lots of soil, a good water once a week and i have had mine for years, occassional plant feed..

If so are you overwatering them - the classic error with both.
Reply:I have no idea where you live in this world, so I can't say if that is why the bamboo dies. Bamboo is hardy only to about zone 6 in canada. It also doesn't like arid country - it likes lots of water and good drainage. Tell us where you live.

I have a bamboo plant and the woman who i bought it from said its ok as long as there is a "little bit of light". My desk gets hardly any natural light and everyone elses desk plants grow fine yet they aren't bamboo. Do you think it would survive?

I bought a lightweight bamboo cane for use in theatrical performance, and when I got it I noticed the cane part was somewhat flexible, with a few "skin-deep" cracks at the top of the cane handle. Anyways, I heard that bamboo is extremely tough and durable and strong, is this true, will my bamboo cane not break under weight even though it seems like it?

I recently got a great deal on a 7X10 bamboo rug. However, the rug is a "natural" color which is similar in color to a piece of unfinished pine. I would like to stain it a darker shade, and I'm posting in hopes that someone has done this before and can give tips/suggestions. The back of the rug has a slip mat attached, so I don't have any place to do a test patch. I can't tell if there is any protective finish on the bamboo, but I would imagine there is. Thanks!

You can't stain over a protective finish..the stain won't absorb. You can paint it as long as you find out what is on it now. Is it oil or latex? If it's oil you can only paint with an oil base paint. Latex won't stick to oil. It may have to be primed first.

Growwing dead bamboo?
ok I know that this sounds weird but I have a staff made out of bamboo that seems to be growwing larger as time goes on, when i got it it was 6ft, but now it looks more like 7ft. Help with bamboo plant?
I have a large bamboo plant that is nice but it has completely overtaken my garden. The roots have grown like crazy and bamboo is popping up everywhere. Is there any way to contain it?? I like the plant but I don't want it in my entire yard.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds like you planted a runner, which can be invasive if not properly contained.
What you need to start out doing is digging down around the primary stand with a shovel to sever any rhizomes that are spreading out trying to establish a grove. You don't need to dig up the yard, just insert shovel, remove, and continue around the plant until you end up where you started. You may also try using a gas powered edger, as most runner's rhizomes are within the first inch or so of the soil.
Next you will need to sever the rhizomes that have escaped. Start where the new shoot has popped up. Carefully dig around it to find the primary rhizome. Then simply start yanking it out of the ground. Again, the rhizomes are shallow so it should come up easy.
Once you have completed this you will need to CONTAIN your bamboo using some kind of root barrier. These guys sell an awesome product that will keep your bamboo contained for life. http://www.lewisbamboo.com/barrier.html
Now that your bamboo is contained you will have to maintain your new mini-grove buy thinning it out every couple of years. You also may find that you did not get rid of all the rhizomes that had escaped, so you may find yourself battling this for a few months to a year, but it will subside and you will succeed.
Hopefully you are rural and it has not escaped into your neighbors yard...

How to clean Lucky Bamboo rocks (gnats growing on it)?
I noticed some fuzzy stuff growing on the rocks of my Lucky Bamboo (maybe algae) and then suddenly had gnats in my apartment. I took the lucky bamboo outside and the gnats went away but now the lucky bamboo is dying from the sunlight. How can i clean the rocks without killing the plant? There are probably gnat eggs growing on the eggs or in the water. Is it too late to save this plant?

Re-planting bamboo???
DH wants to plant some bamboo along our back fence so we can have a privacy shield from the alleyway we currently are looking at. Some guy on Craigslist has some for DH to dig up and replant. I guess it is full grown. It's pretty tall. If DH plants it, will it be limp or will it stand right up? I don't know anything about bamboo. Thanks!!

Be careful with Bamboo, it is invasive. There are two types, generally, clumping and running. I used a 30 mil by 24 inch root barrier to prevent the bamboo from going into the neighbors yard (you would be responsible for any removal or damage by law). If you identify the type of bamboo, then you will be able to know exactly what you have and how it will behave. I recommend the ABS (American Bamboo Society), they really know their bamboo.
I love my Bamboo - I have a Rubromarginata Philostasys which is a Timber bamboo. I also have Moso, and both are invasive if not checked. The shoots are delicious and after about 5 years of growth in the area, will get as big as an Arm. You cut them out, chop them up and have a great stir fry.
Good luck with it, don't stop because of a possible problem, learn how to deal with it, and then enjoy your bamboo. Replanting it is easy! Just take the rhizomes and put some dirt on them. They will clump or spread. You can also take a culm (part that grows out of the ground) and sprout it. See on the node of the culm there is a bump, that will sprout into a plant. Simply set the culm on it's side in a good potting soil.
If you need more information on the bamboo, there are groups that will help you ID the exact species - there are hundreds of species of Bamboo.

How can I get bamboo to grow?
I have a small bamboo that has been growing from the leaves for about a year and it is about twice as tall as it was when I bought it. However, the actual stalk of the bamboo is the same height. There seems to be some hardened green paste on the top of the stalk (which was there when I bought it) and I wonder if that has anything to do with the stunted growth. Is there any way for me to get the actuall bamboo stalk to grow and not just the leaves?

Wood or Bamboo?
I am planning on putting in new flooring on the main floor. I was thinking of wood and then saw bamboo. I know bamboo is better for the environment. I have pets and need durable hopefully if possible scratch free. I would love input from people with experience with both or either.

Because of the finish used both have the same care requirements. The claim that bamboo is more environmentally friendly could be debated. Yes it grows quickly, but most is not farmed it is being harvested from wild stocks to clear the land.
I spent more than 20 yr. owning a janitorial srvice cleaning wood floors. My favorite, especially for a lighter colored floor is Maple.

The problem is we don't know which specific one you have, all nurserys have their own names. You can use the tarp method and cover it to stop the growth. Just make sure it doesn't grow beyu the tarp or it will come back.

I bought these lucky bamboo which are actually a Christmas present for a friend of mine.
However, under my care, one is completely yellow, one's turning yellow, and that only leaves one left that's still "alive and well" (though it seems it won't last long at this pace)

I answer bamboo questions all of the time because 1) I know quite a bit about it and 2) everybody seems to think that all bamboo is running and invasive
ITs true, running bamboo CAN be invasive if it is not maintained right. The simple solution is to buy clumping bamboo of which there are hundreds of species that thrive and require minimal maintenance from cool to tropical climate zones.

I cut some bamboo. I want to use it for landscaping (cutting it into small pieces and using it as little walls to terrace some beds). But, it must be dead first (I do not want to start a bamboo grove in my backyard). So, two questions really. How do I ensure that it won't start growing after I start using it in my planning beds?

I just bought a lucky bamboo plant today and it's rather large (24 inches or so.) I'd like to cut it in half. But when I typed it in the google I saw a lot of people talking about how theirs died... I really don't want to kill it.
So what's the proper way to cut a lucky bamboo plant?

I read that lucky bamboo is actually not bamboo, it is a type of Dracenae, specifically Dracenae Sanderana. In this case, is it safe to put in the vivarium? The safe list says Dracenae, but not specifically Sanderana. I just want to be sure...

Care of bamboo plants?
I have one of those small bamboo plants for the house (just 3 stalks) and I was told that it just needs to be kept watered. I never let its pot run dry but the plant seems to be drying out. Is there something I am missing? I checked for info on the net but all I can find is info on big bamboo plants for the garden.

I have 9 stalks of lucky bamboo potted in its original ceramic container about the size of a large coffee cup. On the picture it came with it shows bamboo that is curled. I was wondering if mine would curl and if it does is there anything I need to do to help it along?

Unhealthy Lucky Bamboo?
I had have a lucky bamboo tree for like 8 years now. The leaves at the top are turning all yellows and dying. It seems like it's infecting the whole bamboo itself. I would like to know how can I turn it around to being healthy again. Thanks in advance.

You should be extremely cautious about putting anything into your tank that may have been exposed to insecticides, floral preservatives or any other type of chemical. To be safe, you should really only put aquarium safe items in your tank unless you are absolutely certain the items are free from any chemical, parasite, bacteria or other harmful items.
Reply:Bamboo is sold at my LFS, and is safe for fish, however - it is mean to be partially submerged, not fully submerged. So it is not real ideal for most fish tanks. Unless you have very tall bamboo and have a place for it to stick out at the top of your tank, you're not going to have much luck with it - it will die and rot before too long. :(
It is unfortunate because it would look fabulous in my 40 gallon bowfront. :(

I am tempting to buy a Chinese bamboo tree from my local shopping mall. - There are SO MANY types of these plants in the giftshop; different stem sizes, types, styles, even colored stems!

We would like to plant some bamboo plants but our gaden can be quite wet especially in the winter. At the moment we have bamboo in pots but would like to transplant it so that it will grow taller/wider.
Do bamboo plants like wet conditions?
Bamboo require deep rich loamy soil kept fertile, during their early years of development by anual mulches of rotted manure, and leaves. It usualy takes two or three years for a clump to become established, so regular feeding, watering ,and protection are essential at first.
Propogation is by root division in spring, retaining a ball of soil around each section. They can also be increased by stem and root cuttings. In some cases some may grow from seed, although few bamboos flower, or if they do they so, may die afterwards.
The common hardy bamboo Arundinaria japonica, makes a dense evergreen screen of surprising grace and elegance, nowhere more suprisingly beside water. Its roots run about with abandon unless checked, but very similar bamboos stay demurely in clumps. There are even dwarf bamboos for miniture plantings. Bamboo roots enjoy moisture, but not actually standing in water.
Many of them have the failing of running roots. Rather than exclude them for that reason, it is worth forming barriers that the roots cannot pass , 18inches deep would be sufficent. Or simply mow around them. A mower will destroy new shoots comming up out of the bounds.
Unfortunatly bamboos are a botanists paradise. The faintest difference of stem colouring provides an excuse for a new name. Perhaps as a result few nurseries grow them.Metake which unfortunatly a spreader, is the only true common one, although the similar A.nitida can be trusted to sty in a clump. The shorter broaadleafed Sasa palmata makes an admirable contrast- but this one is rampant.
I have drawn up a rough guide to help you with how wet your bamboo will stand.

i have bamboo. i dont know the kind but its what pandas eat. its not heavnely bamboo but my dog gets shakey and im wondering is pine also bad for dogs and maple? please respond

you mean 'lucky bamboo'? this is a draceana plant that has been rooted in water-you need to keep fresh water for the roots at all times since there is no dirt in the gravel-keep it at least near a window if there is no sunlight.
if the stem is all yellow and it stinks when you smell it close up then it has rotted-it is a goner.
these things don't last forever they are rooted cuttings growing in just water-you eventually have to plant a cutting if you want to be a healthy plant-it's just a gimmick

Can I put my lucky bamboo plant in the tank with my sea monkeys?
I have a small tank of sea monkeys that has been thriving for months. And I'm curious to know if they would get along well with my bamboo plant. Would the salty water kill the bamboo? Would the bamboo kill the sea monkeys? I read that underwater vegetation like algae helps raise the oxygen levels in the water so the sea monkeys can breathe better... does the same principle go for bamboo plants? What about rocks? I want to make my tank a little more interesting but I don't want to do anything stupid.

Is Bamboo Flooring Difficult to Do Oneself? Any Suggestions?
We recently bought a home with horrible berber (I hate berber!) and I'm very interested in replacing the floors with bamboo. How difficult is it to install myself. I'm handy with tools, but I'm not sure if it's a project I'll get started and never finish if it gets too hard. :-) What tools are necessary for the project and how can I guess how long it will take?
I would also like to get my stairs covered with bamboo, but I heard that stairs are very difficult to do. Thoughts?

Solid bamboo installs the same as hardwood, except you can actually glue solid bamboo down directly over concrete, above grade, on grade, or below grade. As bamboo is grass and not hardwood, it is more "flexible"and adjusts easily to high levels of moisture or the lack of it.
The glue used is usually urethane-based and contains moisture-resistant properties. Prior to installing, you must of course, prep your subfloor. This entails checking the moisture level of the concrete sub, making sure it is flat and even, sanding down high parts and filling in low parts.
There is also the engineered bamboo type which can be floated if you are a bit hesitant to glue solid directly onto concrete.

Solid bamboo installs the same as hardwood, except you can actually glue solid bamboo down directly over concrete, above grade, on grade, or below grade. As bamboo is grass and not hardwood, it is more "flexible"and adjusts easily to high levels of moisture or the lack of it.
The glue used is usually urethane-based and contains moisture-resistant properties. Prior to installing, you must of course, prep your subfloor. This entails checking the moisture level of the concrete sub, making sure it is flat and even, sanding down high parts and filling in low parts.
There is also the engineered bamboo type which can be floated if you are a bit hesitant to glue solid directly onto concrete.

I am growing bamboo in a large pot, planted it last year, getting new growth this year. ANy tips on how to help it to grow taller? And stronger? What does Bamboo like?

I'm looking for a bamboo screen - Looking at it with the bamboo running vertically, I need the dimensions to be roughly 4-6 feet tall (i.e. that would be the length of the pieces of bamboo) by 3-6 feet wide. The bamboo itself can be any size - skinny to fat.
I have almost zero budget for this so I'm hoping to find one either for free or dirt cheap.

I want to plant a bamboo plant in my backyard but dont hve much space.Can I contain its growth within 1'x1'
I have a small space 6 feet x 1.5 feet where I can plant some bushes in my backyard on the ground. I fancy bamboo so much but dont know how much it might spread.I have kept a space of 1 foot for the bamboo. Can it become green and tall in that space? I have planted a palm and a song of India, besides money plants and some crotons. I also have a saflera in a pot in that space. But will the bamboo take over the entire space.. the area small and I live in a small flat. Just wonder if I can have a green bamboo bush there without having to struggle to manage if it tends to grow too wide or too massive. Grateful for some advice!!

Reply:I would recommend then growing maybe 2 bamboo plants in some large, wooden boxes. This way you can grow either a runner or a clumper without fear of it taking over and spreading beyond your control.
Also, since I don't know you're climate I can't really recommend which type to plant, but if you are in a climate that gets heavy freezes then most clumpers are out of the question, except for a few of the mountain bamboos in the Fargesia family.
Should you plant it in the ground, even one clumping bamboo plant will eventually take over such a space in about 3 years.
Now should you put in pots you will need to remove the entire plant ever couple years and divide it, otherwise it will become root bound and kill itself.

The running bamboo will grow runners(roots that spread laterally and grow shoots above ground at intervals) that will spread as much as they can. The cluster type will only grow off of a main root system and will grow new shoots very slowly. Do research to find cluster bamboo and you will be fine.

Lucky Bamboo Problem?
My Lucky Bamboo has brown leaves and seems to be dying on me. I have it in a small vase with water, but would it be beneficial to transfer it to a bigger area? Do they thrive better in soil? My Mom who has recently passed away got it for me, and I want to try to save it. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thank you.

It does okay in just water, but it will actually do well in soil also. So you could try replanting it in soil if you would like. If the roots have become extremely long and wrapped up in the bottom of the vase you have now, you can trim them back. I usually cut off dead leaves with a pair of scissors. Make sure it always has enough water and that you are feeding it regularly. Indoor plant foods work just fine. Just follow the directions on for the product you buy. You can also trim the roots back every year.
Also avoid direct sunlight...this damages the leaves.

Cut off the yellow part of the stalk, light a candle (white looks better) %26amp; drip melted wax over the cut you made, making sure you completely seal the cut. Then put it back in your vase. Change the water too. If you have a stem on the dead part that's still green, cut it off the stalk %26amp; put in a separate vase with water. It'll grow roots in about a month. This is what I've done %26amp; I still have my plants. Plus a new one with the stem.

OK,I got a Lucky Bamboo about 3 years ago in Florida and it died a couple weeks ago,turned yellow,etc.There were a few little pieces or little stalks that hadnt died yet that I broke off and put in water with gravel to get roots.They haven't grown bigger or anything and I was wondering..what should I do with them now? They have very long,nice roots but will they ever grow into a big bamboo stalk or always be little with no growth? What do I do now?

i think Wacom Bamboo Fun is better to buy. as you see, i have canvassed Bamboo Fun since i'm also looking to buy a graphic pen tablet. it provides more convenience to use, provided that you are a hobbyist for drawing. i am planning to buy a Wacom Bamboo Fun soon because it provides me the creative side amongst the Wacom tablets. with that, i think it'll be perfect for me because i'm a budding artist, photomanipulator and a digital artist that uses Photoshop CS2.
i recommend you buying Bamboo Fun because it's small and has variety of colors to choose to match your personality. it's also a value for your money because of its retail price. although the con here is the mouse because i think it'll be kinda awkward for a mouse to be used in a small, space-saver graphic tablet.

i think Wacom Bamboo Fun is better to buy. as you see, i have canvassed Bamboo Fun since i'm also looking to buy a graphic pen tablet. it provides more convenience to use, provided that you are a hobbyist for drawing. i am planning to buy a Wacom Bamboo Fun soon because it provides me the creative side amongst the Wacom tablets. with that, i think it'll be perfect for me because i'm a budding artist, photomanipulator and a digital artist that uses Photoshop CS2.
i recommend you buying Bamboo Fun because it's small and has variety of colors to choose to match your personality. it's also a value for your money because of its retail price. although the con here is the mouse because i think it'll be kinda awkward for a mouse to be used in a small, space-saver graphic tablet.
