Sprouting bamboo...?

I've looked around on the internet and can't seem to find what I'm looking for...

I was given a little bamboo stalk in a wee jar- I would like to encourage the stock to sprout some more leaves... It already has one offshoot that is growing quite well but I'd like another offshoot to grow so it's not just a stick with a couple of leaves... How do I get it to do this?

Sorry if that's a little vauge... I don't even know what type of bamboo this is... Also it's in this wierd gel stuff that I pour water into- it's root system has developed well- Do you think I can plant it in some well drained soil?

Thanks for the tips!

Sprouting bamboo...?

Reply:Scott, Bambusa is a genus not a family. And there are some rather small Bambusa species like B. multiplex
Reply:get a nice big, wide pot and plant the bamboo in it --gell and all so as not to disturb the root sysatem and water it as needed. Its a grass. It will send shoots out and you will get all the bamboo you want.
Reply:I LOVE bamboo! So easy to grow.

I don't plant mine in dirt. They're in bowls or vases filled with pretty rocks and water. (The containers are clear so I can see the rocks.)

I don't know about sprouting bamboo, but one time I accidentally broke a huge leafy sprout off the main stalk-y thing (the thick part that looks like asparagus). I didn't want to throw it away, so I stuck it in water to see what would happen. It didn't die... continued to grow and I eventually put it in with another bamboo arrangement I had.
Reply:What you are describing is NOT bamboo, but "Lucky Bamboo", aka Dracaena sanderiana. This plant is primarily an indoor plant and will not grow to mammoth proportions as a bamboo in the Bambusa family.
Reply:They say bamboo is bad to put in a yard. I have two bamboo patches that I planted 5 years ago. They are still where I put them. I get about 2 new stalks per year and they are no problem.
Reply:bamboo is not something you want to plant in your yard, I do know that much. It can take over a yard and is very hard to get rid of, so if you are planting it, do it in a pot.
Reply:sure you can put it into some soil also get some fertilizer for it .it will grow realy nice and big and healthy for you try to get the fertilizer with the fish oil in it.it is the best kind to buy.good luck happy planting.
Reply:Any reasonable garden soil will do, Partial shade is best, when you decide to plant it out.
Reply:Are you sure its bamboo? There is a dracena that's being sold as bamboo. It has one or more stalks and somewhere on the stalk leaves pop out.

There are two kinds of bamboo: spreading and clumping but they grow in the ground (maybe in pots???). They have very distinct leaves and you can find them on the web - pictures of them.

I really think you do not have bamboo even though they call it that with the dracena plants. The dracena will grow in soil but instead of the one stalk growing you should get shoots that come out from the sides and push up through the soil.

Check the web for pictures. Good luck!
