I love bamboo and money plants but they always die on me - why?

My dad recommended putting a rusty nail in with the bamboo plant.

Does anyone have any other tips to keep my bamboo plants alive - I hate the place where I'm living right now so maybe they do not like it either?

Thanks in advance.

if you hate your place, you may not be giving them the attention they need either, dont know about bamboo indoors as only have it growing in the garden, but money plants:

difused light, deep pot, lots of soil, a good water once a week and i have had mine for years, occassional plant feed..

this seems a good site.
Reply:Don't over water them but don't leave them to completely dry out before watering them either!
Reply:DONT WATER THEM TOO MUCH
Reply:i live in Scotland.I don't have bamboo but my money plant thrives by being ignored and watered occasionally....i keep it indoors from October till past the last frost(hopefully) then it sits in the garden in its pot, some times it gets too much water, sometimes not enough just as it would in the wild.
Reply:Bamboo likes plenty of water.
Reply:i keep my bamboo in a clear vase and full of clean water.its grown so big i might have to change it to a different vase soon as they love water just make sure u change it every 3 days.Good luck and happy growing
Reply:Try weed plants
Reply:Can't tell you what to do with money plants, but with bamboo, keep them in about 2-3 inches of water and change it every 5 days, when you change the water, rinse the roots of the bamboo too...........had mine for 3 years now and they are going strong, taken lots of cuttings from them too.
Reply:Sounds like you are using pots, is that right?

If so are you overwatering them - the classic error with both.
Reply:I have no idea where you live in this world, so I can't say if that is why the bamboo dies. Bamboo is hardy only to about zone 6 in canada. It also doesn't like arid country - it likes lots of water and good drainage. Tell us where you live.
