Lucky Bamboo Problem?

My Lucky Bamboo has brown leaves and seems to be dying on me. I have it in a small vase with water, but would it be beneficial to transfer it to a bigger area? Do they thrive better in soil? My Mom who has recently passed away got it for me, and I want to try to save it. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thank you.

Oh, and another thing.. how do i remove the dead leaves from the bamboo? Can i just pull them off?

Lucky Bamboo Problem?
Lucky bamboo is not actually a bamboo. This plant is in the same family as corn. A lot of people have been selling it in these vases with just water. It does okay in just water, but it will actually do well in soil also. So you could try replanting it in soil if you would like. If the roots have become extremely long and wrapped up in the bottom of the vase you have now, you can trim them back. I usually cut off dead leaves with a pair of scissors. Make sure it always has enough water and that you are feeding it regularly. Indoor plant foods work just fine. Just follow the directions on for the product you buy. You can also trim the roots back every year.

Also avoid direct sunlight...this damages the leaves.
Reply:The Lucky Bamboo is one of the easiest plants to grow. Make sure it is not in a cold drafty place or too close to a heat register. Make sure the water is not sour. You can tell if it is by smelling it. I usually change my water once a month and keep it filled to the top of the vase.

You should cut the leaves off close to the stalk because if you tear them off you will damage the stalk.
Reply:I'd try emptying and rinsing the water and/or trying a new vase.

Do you have it in a vase with stones, or just by itself.

I'd want to make sure that the roots were able to grow.

It is possible to cut part of the plant off to propagate it, but I've had mixed success.

It is generally a good idea to cut off dead leaves. Take a pair of scissors, and wipe with rubbing alcohol before and after each cut to sterilize it. Let it dry a little too.
Reply:have had my Lucky Bamboo for six years,,, and looks great,, Occasionally a leaf may start to turn brown, I just wait till is completely brown and it will peel off easily from plant,, and new ones continue to grow,, About once a year , will change vase to one slightly larger and make sure stones are clean..No soil ! They do need alot of water, never let them become dry
Reply:Why don't you stop in at your local Florist and ask him/her? You would be getting an expert opinion as opposed to those of us who really do not have a "green thumb".
